Computing

The primary focus in Computing is to provide a high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. As a result, the following areas are covered in each year group.

  • Computational thinking.
  • Programming
  • Creativity
  • Computer networks
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Productivity

When planning the curriculum consideration was also taken to incorporate teaching and learning which would also address the unique challenges facing our children:

  • Developing resilience and independence skills in computing
  • Exposing our children to different national and global issues
  • Transferring knowledge and skills into Long Term Memory – ‘Stickability of knowledge and skills’.

Our curriculum has been developed in collaboration with Mr Dix, who teaches many computing lessons at the academy, who is employed by Brighouse High School to teach computing across their feeder schools. This ensures that we are supporting where most of our children go after St John’s. It also allows teaching and planning to be enhanced by shared practice between the feeder schools.
