Art

The primary focus in art lessons at St. John’s is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  We believe everyone has the capability to be creative. Learning through Art is about developing that capability in both a physical and visual way. During our art experiences the children can convey their own personal experiences, thoughts, feelings and responses by exploring and creating. Pupils will gain personal and social skills, self-expression, consideration of others’ views, leading and following and aesthetic awareness.

The curriculum has been designed in a way so that children can learn about different artists (past and present); practise skills and techniques within the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, collage and printing; use the correct vocabulary; experiment, invent and create their own pieces of art; critique their own and others’ pieces of art; and promote a love of art and design. The curriculum has also been designed in a way to build on previous learning, experiences and achievements.

When planning the art curriculum consideration was also taken to incorporate teaching and learning which would also address the unique challenges facing our children:

  • Developing resilience and independence skills
  • Exposing our children to different national and global issues
  • Transferring knowledge and skills into Long Term Memory – ‘Stickability of knowledge and skills’.
